Lorenzo de' Medici - il Vecchio

(1395 - 23 Sep 1440)

Lorenzo was a younger son of Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici and Piccarda (Nannina) Bueri. He was overshadowed by his elder brother Cosimo 'Pater Patrie' de' Medici. Lorenzo must have been close to his brother, as the accounts of many of the events relating to Cosimo also refer to him. For example, in September 1433, when Cosimo was banished from Florence for ten years in a successful plot by the powerful Albizzi family, Lorenzo was also banished, though for only five years as he was seen as a quieter and less offensive figure. Both were declared to be excluded from office in Florence forever. However the Albizzi were soon overthrown in turn, and both brothers returned to Florence in triumph exactly one year after their expulsion.

In 1416 Lorenzo married Ginevra Cavalcanti, daughter of Giovanni Cavalcanti and Costanza Malaspini, and they had one son, Pier Francesco, who would have progeny. Lorenzo died on 23 September 1440 at the Medici villa Carregi near Florence.
