Grand Ma’s fork and knife.

Hayes Seville tells this story about his Grandmother Carbaugh’s fork & knife which he has passed on to the next generation.
He feels she must have used this one fork and knife most of her life because the tines on the fork are angled and the knife blade, attached to a make-shift handle, has been worn thin.
You could never throw away a bone around Mary Martha before all the marrow was dug out. And it didn’t matter what kind of bone. Even squirrel heads had to have the marrow removed and spread on a slice of bread before it could be disregarded. Mary Martha Truax Carbaugh was a great aficionado of squirrel.
He tells the story about his stay in Delaware. His grandmother had come to stay with him, to do the cooking and cleaning, for a time. And during that time his boss at the feed store took a spiritual liking to Mary Martha. They did enjoy a visit with one another and on one occasion, Mary Martha mentioned she was hungry for squirrel meat.
Not long after that visit, during working hours, his boss told Hayes to come along with him, so they both got in the car and drove a ways to a farm. He took a lane that was situated between a wooded area and a corn field before he parked the car. At that point he told Hayes to open the car trunk and get out the guns and bullets that he had put there earlier that morning. They were going squirrel hunting!
He told Hayes that he felt this was a good spot to hunt squirrel because either the squirrel would be going into the corn field to gather food or returning to the trees. All they had to do was wait and he picked out places for he and Hayes to hide from view of the varmints.
Hayes said that in no time at all did a squirrel appear holding a nibble. The fuzzy creature stopped, right in the middle of the lane, as he chewed at corn clutched in his paws. It was the perfect shot!
As he continued his story, Hayes unhappily said, “I lifted the gun and slowly brought it back down. I lifted the gun again and slowly brought it back down once more.” This happened with another squirrel or two while in the distance, he could hear the boss’s gun going off from time to time.
Later that day, his boss, with his catch of squirrel, came back to where Hayes was waiting. He wanted to know why Hayes wasn’t hunting. Hays explained, “ I don’t want to be any part of getting you in trouble with the law! Squirrel season isn’t in!”
Never-the-less, the men took the squirrel back home, cleaned them and guiltily enjoyed eating them after Mary Martha fried them up. And of course, each bone had to had the marrow removed with Mary Martha’s lop-sided fork.
