Rodney E. Piper, a Muncie businessman and often-controversial state senator, died Monday in Ball Memorial Hospital. He was 68 and resided at 206 S. Manning Ave.
Mr. Piper owned and operated Associated Sign & Post Co. and Associated Specialties in Muncie. A Democrat, he served two terms in the Indiana Senate, one in the 1960s and the other in the '70s.
He was born in Tewksbury, Mass., and grew up in that area. He later lived in Washington, D.C., before moving to Muncie in 1949. Mr. Piper attended Boston College for two years before joining the Marines during World War II. He participated in the first invasion by U.S. forces of Guadalcanal Island in the South Pacific.
A graduate of the National Academy of Broadcasting and Sciences, Washington, D.C., Mr. Piper's first job in Muncie was as a salesman for WLBC radio. In 1956, he started Associated Sign & Post Co. and Associated Advertising Specialties, both of which he owned at the time of his death.
Mr. Piper was in the Indiana Senate for eight years. He first ran for nomination in the 1960 primary election, but lost by 96 votes. In 1964 he won the nomination and his first Senate term.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Muncie Kiwanis Club, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Jane Shriner Piper; a son, Michael Piper, Muncie; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Meeks Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, of which he was a member of the board of directors, or Delaware County Cancer Society.
