Mrs. Thelma L. (BRUMBAUGH) BAKER, 78, Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg, formerly of Williamsburg RR2, died Thursday night, September 6, 2001, at the Home following an extended illness.
She was born May 9, 1923, a daughter of the late Paul A, Sr and Ruth (ALLISON) BRUMBAUGH. She married J. Calvin BAKER June 6, 1944, at Fairview Church of the Brethren, Williamsburg RR2. Mrs. BAKER was an active member of the church for 60 years, where she served as Deacon Church Board member, commission member and was active in the Women's Fellowship. She also was a Sunday School teacher, pianist, choir and cantata member and a vocalist along with her sister Margaret SOLLENBERGER. On the District level, she had served as a Conference delegate and as an Adult Cabinet member.
Prior to her marriage, she was employed at Rhule's Restaurant and Westvaco, both in Williamsburg. The BAKERS spent their married years working on the family dairy farm, purchased in 1945. She was a great supporter of the Morrisons Cove Home. She was past president and active member of the Morrisons Cove Home Auxiliary for the past 30 years. She was also the Morrisons Cove Home representative for the Fairview Church for several years. She became a resident of the home during the past two years.
Mrs. BAKER was well known for her cooking, baking, and quilting. She won numerous awards, including Best-of-Show and many blue ribbons for her creations. Along with her responsibilities as a farm wife and mother, she was very active in the Church and community. She was a member of the Williamsburg Civic Club, Scotch Valley Grange and the Morrisons Cove Republican Club. She also served six years on the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau State Ladies Committee and was finishing a 20-year term as majority inspector for the Hudson Township Board of Elections.
Surviving are her husband, J. Calvin BAKER, who resides at the
farmhouse: five children: William (married to Susan BUMGARDENER), who resides and farms on Clover Creek, Williamsburg R.R.2. Carol (married to Robert WASSON), who is director of Brookline Home Care and Hospice, State College. Larry (married to Patti SUPKO), who farms in Loretta. Linda (married to Dr. William MESSERSMITH), who is a veterinarian and resides in Mertztown, PA., and Norma, who resides in Wilmington, N.C., where she is employed as a nuclear medicine technologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center: 10 grandchildren: five great-grandchildren: a sister, Margaret SOLLENBERGER and two brothers: Paul F. BRUMBAUGH Jr. and Mervin BRUMBAUGH.
