ASSESSOR FATALLY STRICKEN
Huntingdon County's chief assessor, Carl E. CLAPPER, Aitch, R.D. 1, suffered a fatal heart attack at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 1972, at his home. He was riding a power mower at the time he was stricken. He was rushed to the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital via ambulance, but was dead on arrival at the institution. Clapper, 59, has served as chief assessor since October 1, 1957.
The deceased was born in Hopewell Township on March 4, 1913, a son of Oliver C. and Anna B. (Dorman) CLAPPER. He was united in marriage on Jan. 19, 1935 to Violet Stone, the ceremony being performed at Keyser, W. Va.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Mrs. Kenneth (Shirley) GONGLOFF, Aitch, R.D., and Blair A. CLAPPER, Hesston. Five grandchildren also survive, along with four brothers and one sister: Earl D. CLAPPER, Aitch, R.D.; Milford CLAPPER, Huntingdon R.D. 1; Rawleigh CLAPPER, Martinsburg; Ray CLAPPER, Saxton and Alice CLAPPER, Aitch, R. D. One sister preceded him in death.
He was active in the Russellville United Church of Christ and Sunday School. He taught a Sunday School class for 43 years, from the time he was 16 years of age, and he had been on the church consistory for 40 years. He was a past president of the Huntingdon County Men's Fellowship of the United Church of Christ.
He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, Mount Moriah Lodge No. 300, Huntingdon; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Altoona, Huntingdon County Shrine Club and Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. He also belonged to Lincoln Grange and the Pennsylvania Assessors' Association.
The deceased worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways for many years until 1956 and he was an accountant for Speck Pontiac, Huntingdon at the time he was appointed chief assessor.
He was active in the Huntingdon County Heart Association and served as the county Heart Fund director on several occasions.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at the Haverstock Memorial Home, McConnellstown. The Rev. Richard T. Squire will officiate and interment will be made in Russellville Cemetery. Friends are being received at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home this Monday evening at 8 o'clock. It is the request of the family that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Huntingdon County Heart Association.
