In 1941, Joseph received his BS at Towson State Teachers College, now Towson University. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry from OCT 1942 to FEB 1946. Upon his return, he taught in Baltimore County, then continued his education at Columbia University Teachers College receiving his masters degree in 1948. Returning to Baltimore County, he became supervisor of secondary social studies, and a media specialist until his retirement caused by ill health in 1980. His honors included Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi and he was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the History Teachers of Maryland in 1963 and the Red Cross Service Award by the State of Maryland on 5 MAY 1980 as well as a certificate for twenty years of outstanding service with the American Red Cross.
