Individual Details
Martha S. BARKER
(ABT 1671 - ABT 1761)
Martha Barker was the only daughter of Samuel Barker, Gentleman, of Barlborough, county Derby. Although her birth date is unknown, a letter from the rector of Barlborough to William J. Hill in 1965 states that a Martha "Bowlesby" died and was buried there 19 February 1761.
Martha (Barker) Bowlby's parents were such devout Quakers (Friends) that
they were imprisoned for three months in the winter of 1685/86, when Martha was about 14 or 15 years old, for refusing to swear oaths. We do not know whether or not Martha's parents were among the Quakers who did not celebrate special days and whether or not Martha chose not to do so; however, it is probably safe to assume that Thomas' siblings and their families celebrated Christmas like most families in England at that time, even if Martha preferred that she and Thomas and their children did not.
