Individual Details
James MUDFORD
(21 Dec 1829 - 15 Jan 1901)
James jumped ship at Nelson and was gaoled for the offence. He met MaryAnn while working at a Hotel as a barmaid. Apparently, he proposed to her on a dare, and she accepted.
After their marriage the first home for the family was at Bankhouse. They later moved to a farm at Hillock's Road, Spring Creek. On 25th April 1859, they purchased 50 acres on Dick's Road and became the third family to settle in Tua Marina. Their new house was made from blocks of turf, cut into brick shape. In 1868, James built the school on the site where the Tua Marina Pioneer Cairn now stands. As a bullock driver, James contributed to the construction of the first Picton Road.
MUDFORD FLAT - a crossing of an arm of the swamp, half a mile from the railway tunnel was named after him.
In the late 1870's James, Mary and their family and the Cargill children (who were now grown up), loaded their belongings onto a ship and sailed north, settling at Campbelltown (renamed Rongotea in 1896). in 1878 sons George, Richard and John brought sections on 'Jones Line' Kiamatarau Road, Rongotea. Three owned on seperate titles of over 300 acres.
It is recorded that a Mudford attended school at Rongotea in 1880,possibly Henry William who was John Meredith's youngest brother.
Later in 1905 the Mudford's purchased town sections in Rongotea for the sum of £10 or £20
