James Edward MUDFORD
(5 Oct 1865 - 15 Dec 1943)
In 1912 James moved his family to a 500 acre farm at Matangi, Waikato.They later left this farm and purchased another at Turanga-a-moana in 1920. From 1921 to 1939, James and Alice farmed land bought from the Trounson Estate, Dargaville, living on in the original homestead, a big rambling house built of solid Kauri, with hand-carved ceilings and fire surrounds. This building was still standing in 1979.
James was for many years a director of the Wairoa Dairy Company and chaiman of the local school commitee.
In 1940 they moved to Bayly Road, Okoroire, James becoming director of the Hinuera Dairy Company.
James was also a lay preacher for the Brethren Church.
James was a Gallipoli veteran and was gassed in France, this affected his health for the rest of his life.
