When Emma was a baby, she was being bathed by her mother when friendly Maoris arrived to warn of a war party in the vicinity. Before mother and baby reached safety, the war party arrived and tried to take Emma, they failed in their attempt, however deep scratch marks were left on her shoulders, marks which she carried with her for the rest of her life.
