Maria F. ATKINSON

(20 Sep 1817 - 13 Dec 1837)

Obituary in the "Christian Herald", a Baptist Newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia.
Published 12/29/1837
"Died, on Wednesday, 13th inst., at 4 o'clock P. M. at the residence of Elder Geo. W. Trice, King William County, Va., after a severe illness of one week, the amiable and beloved one of all who knew her, Mrs. Maria R., wife of Wm. W. Wingo. She has left a bereaved husband, one sister, and numerous friends and relatives to mourn their irreparable loss. All her sufferings she bore with the most Christian fortitude--not a murmur escaped her lips; therefore, we resign her to the will of God, for it is he that giveth and it is he that has taken her home to rest. And that is the only consolation her bereaved husband has, that she has finished her earthly career, and is now sitting at the right hand of him who made her--for as a Christian she lived, and as one she died. Therefore,

His only joy on earth is gone,
The grave's become her bed;
And never, never will return---
She's numbered with the dead.

Farewell, for oft we've sighed,
Yet while our hearts are beating,
Even 'mid our griefs a thought would glide,
To hours of future meetings.

Now dark is all I see---
And never, thought I, never,
That I was doomed to part from thee,
To say farewell forever.
