John "Grandsire" CHANDLER

John Chandler was born in 1755 in Lunenburg County VA, a son of Joel and Agnes Chandler and lived in Lunenburg and Macklenburg Counties VA until moving to Newberry County SC before the Revolution. He enlisted in the SC Militia as did his father and brothers Joseph, Obediah and Shadrack.

John volunteered in 1776 in a Company Commanded by Captain James Liles in a Regiment Commanded by Colonel John Liles. He served intermittent tours of active duty for the duration of the war each time enlisting in Newberry County.

1776 In the early part of his service John performed duty described as "wagon service" (1) which which was not a part of his assignment to Captain Liles. In 1776 Captain Liles marched his Company which included John to Lindley's Fort SC, then to Ellison's Fort, thence to join General Williamson at Seneca SC. There was a skirmishs with the Indians on each march. John was then discharged.

1777 John was drafted into the same Company and marched to Granby SC to join general Richardson, then to Rabun Creek and Little River. Johwas discharged and drafted again when he marched to augusta GA and skirmished with Tory Troops. He marched back to SC where was discharged.

1778-79 John reenlisted and marched to join General Richardson at Bacon's Bridge. They marched to Stono Ferry SC where they engaged a British Force in July 1779. John was again discharged.

1780-82 John joined the same Company and marched to the Catawba River to join General Sumter (2). They fought Tory Forces at Ramsuer's Mill in June 1780 (General Rutherford commanded during this battle), then to Charlotte NC to engage the Tories at Rocky Mount NC and Hanging Rock in august 1780. The last battle of this campaigh was at Fishing Creek SC where they were defeated by tories led by Banestre Tarleton. after returning to Newberry County SC John continued in service "on every necessary employment in chasing Tories" until the end of the war.

John lived in Newberry County SC during the war and for some years thereafter before moving to Greenville County SC.

John Chandler applied for a Federal Pension on 5 October 1832. The pension was granted and approved by Certificate on 14 Febuary 1839 effedtive 4 March 1831. He mentioned his brothers Joseph, Obediah and Shadrack as persons knowledgable of his service. Joseph and Obediah died a fishing Creek. They were older that John and their deaths were the reason John had to handle his fathers estate at his death.

He then moved to Benton (now Calhoun) County AL to be near "a part of my family with whom I wished to spend the remainder of my days". His obituary states that he died 10 March 1850 at the age of 104 (his correct age was 94). He was affectionately referred to as "Grandsire Chandler". He and Agnes had 10 children.
