Joel CHANDLER

(1727 - 1799)

Joel Chandler was born about 1727 in King William County VA. In his early years he lived in Goochland County VA until he was 22 (see his fathers tithes at 16, 18 and 21 in 1748 in St. James Parish) and then Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Counties VA. Joel married Agnes UNKNOWN and owned land in Mecklenburg County. He inherited part of his father Joseph's estate in 1763. He sold most of his property in 1764-5 but remained in VA until 1767. Joel, his 5 sons and his wife and daughter then moved to Newberry County SC. where he lived in the Old 96'th District adjacent to Robert and Jeremiah Chandler. Joel was granted additional land in 1771 and 1772. Although Joel was over 50 he and 4 of his sons entered military service from Newberry County SC during the Revolution.

His first service was in 1779 and early 1780 where he provided transport service ("waggon, team and driver") for which he received regular militia pay scale.

In the Summer of 1780 he served several tours in Regiments commanded by Colonel Waters and Colonel Liles. He was in the same Regiment as his sons Joseph, Obediah and John in a campaign in the summer of 1780. That force commanded by General Rutherford and later by General Sumter organized at the Catawbe River in NC. There were battles at Ramsuer's Mill (June 1780) (2), Rocky Mount (July 1780) and Hanging Rock (August 1780). The last battle of this campaign was at Fishing Creek SC which was a defeat where Joel's horse was shot from under him and he lost his two elder sons Joseph and Obediah. This action was agains Banistre Tarleton and some accounts have both Chandlers killed by the sword of Tarleton in front of Joel. The unit returned to Newberry County where it resumed operations against Tories in that area until hostilities ended in 1782.

Joel continued to live in Newberry County SC after the war. In 1784 he lived next to his son John. In 1786 he and his remaining family were living in Greenville County SC on a homestead on the Reedy River and later he is listed in the 1790 Census. He accumulated large land holdings before he died in 1799. His will (SC Records V2 pg 184-185) named his wife Agnes 3 sons and 4 daughters.
