Peter Moore WINGO
(30 Apr 1826 - 24 Aug 1890)
Served as a private in the Mexican War 1846-1848 in Company I, Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama Guards 1'st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers under Captain J. E. T. Smith, commanded by Colonel John R. Coffey (Coffee). Enlisted in Benton County, Alabama on June 6, 1845 for a term of twelve months. Went by ship to Port Isabel and landed there on July 4, 1846, was assigned to General Zachary Taylor's Army and marched to Camargo, Mexico where he remained until October, 1846. Went from there to Tampico, Mexico where he joined General Winfield Scott's Army and participated in the bombardment of Veracruz and the Battle of Cerro Gordo. This battle ranks as among the most important battles fought by US forces between Veracruz and the march to Mexico City. A mountain pass near Jalapa, Cerro Gordo lies 60 mies northwest of Veracruz. General Scott's 9,000 man force attacked Santa Anna's force of 13,000 on April 17 and 18, 1847 and forced them to flee. Was injured in the neck at Camargo, Mexico on September 25, 1846 which resulted in recurring abscess and disability. Was discharged in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 25, 1847.
At the time of enlistment Peter was six feet tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair and a farmer by occupation. His bounty warrant file number (NNRG) 47-160-16639 and bounty warrant number 16639 for 160 acres of land. His pension file number (NNRG) WC7509 and pension number 9699.

"The State of Texas, County of Kaufman
In the name of God, Amen. I, Peter M. Wingo, being of sound mind but phically Afflicted do make, ordain and declare this my last evice And testament.
Item 1st - After my death I desire my Executor to pay all my just debts.
Item 2nd - It is my will and desire that all my right title claim and interest to any and all property situated in the State of Texas and particularly situated in the County of Kaufman in said state, be it real, personal or mixed, be (unreadable) and absolute title in my youngest son, now living with me, William C. Wingo. It being the intent and meaning of this item that the said William C. Wingo shall at my death be immediately vested with one equal undived interest in the Homestead where I now live and in all the personal property there situate. My present wife Susan M. Wingo having and possessing a community therein of one-half thereof.
Item 3rd - I hereby appoint my wife Susan M. Wingo Executor of this, my Will and direct that she be not required to give any Bond as such, and that the Probate Court have no further jurisdiction over my estate in accordance with the laws of said state.

Obituary in Terrell Times Star, 9/6/1890.
"Kemp - The remains of Peter M. Wingo who lived near Kaufman were brought to Kemp for burial. "Uncle Pete" was a survivor of the Mexican War and a defender of the Southern Cause. He died of cancer. He was the father of Tom Wingo, well-known merchant of this county."
