Served as a Corporal in the U. S. Army in WWI. Enlisted on July 3, 1918 at Atlanta, Georgia with Company L, 383 Infantry, Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina and served commbat duty in France where he suffered a lung disorder following a poison gas attack. he was discharged on December 11, 1918 at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina.
