His ancestors came from Amelia County, Virginia. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, serving as a private under Captains Chapin, Garrold, Ford, Hudson, and Anderson and Colonels Anderson, Lynch, Scott, Merriweather and Good on the Virginia Line. On one occasion, being hotly pursued by the Tories, he narrowly escaped being captured by conceiling himself behind a log, the Tories passed so close he could have touched several of them with his hand. He left Amelia County, Virginia and came to Spartanburg District SC shortly after the war in 1793. He was a citizen of highest respectability and a man of exemplary piety.
Served as a private in the Revolutionary War against Great Britain. He served four tours of duty. He first joined the Continental Army, Virginia Line under Captain Chafin at Amelia County, Virginia. He was discharged at Rowland Church by Captain Gamold.
He next joined the Virginia Militia or State Troops in 1777-1778 under Captain Lewis Ford and served near Norfolk, Virginia for three months. He was discharged in Petersburg, Virginia by Captain Ford.
He next served in the Virginia Militia or State Troops as a substitute for Thomas Pollard under Captain Hudson, Lieutenant Dupe, Major Butler, Colonel Lynch and General Green for a term of six months. They marched across North Carolina, fought at the Battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina on March 15, 1781 and pursued the British Army as far as Ramsy's Mill on Deep River. He was discharged at Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina.
His last tour was with the Virginia Militia under Captain Anderson, Major Long, Colonel Merriweather and General La Fayette. He volunteered under Captain Scott in Colonel Good's Infantry. His army was defeated by Tarleton's Cavalry between Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia on July 6, 1781. His location of discharge is unknown.
His bounty warrant file number (NNRG) R11716 and his bounty warrant was not approved. He applied for a pension on December 29, 1847 (R-11714) but due to advanced age, death soon after and probably feeble of body and mind could not provide sufficient proof of service. No pension file, etc.
