The following notice appeared in a listing of Confederate Veterans published in the Spartanburg Herald of Wednesday, 17 August 1910:
"Wingo, Lewis Landrum, born Feb. 15, 1836, Beech Springs township, Spartanburg County. Enlisted Jan. 1862, Co. E. 2nd SC Cav., Capt Geo. B. Dean. Promoted to Corporal. Farmer."

Served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Enlisted on January 29, 1862 at Columbia, South Carolina under J. S. Preston and later attached to Company E, 2'nd Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry (consolidation of the Cavalry Battalion of Hampton's Legion, the 4'th Battalion of South Carolina Cavalry, Captain Boykin's Company, South Carolina Cavalry and Captain Lipscomb's Company,South Carolina Cavalry) at the rank of 3'rd Coporal in June, 1862. Later received the rank of 2nd Corporal. The 2'nd Regiment South Carolina Cavalry was attached to the Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of Major General James Ewell Brown (J.E.B.) Stewart. It was in the division commanded by South Carolinian, Brigadier General Wade Hampton with Company E commanded by Captain Alvin H. Dean.

The Army of Northern Virginia projected its horse soldiers in an agressive role, employing them offensively, in mass, and often far afield of the main army, they were literally the eyes and ears of the army. The 2'nd Regiment achieved an impeccable service record which included major combat engagements of the Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Brandy Station, Battle of Antietam and numerous skirmishes and diversion actions.

After the war in 1867 Louis purchased 90 acres from his father. It was located between Inman and Lyman, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The original house was destroyed but a newer one was built in 1887, now owned by Mr. Donnie Hinson. Burried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
