Raymond H. Wingo, 94, died Friday (Jan. 16, 2004) at Friendly Acres Retirement Community. He was born Aug. 23, 1909, in Chilicothe, Mo., to Woodrow Walker and Alice (Volk) Wingo, They preceded him in death. He married Emma Margaret Kasper July 20, 1935 in Newton. She survives. He retired as a warehouse person for the Santa Fe Railroad. Four generations of Wingo men have followed him working for the Santa Fe.
He was amember of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Whitesell-Finnell Post in Newton, the Wichita-Newton Gem and Mineral Society and the Newton Rockhound Club. He served in th Navy during World War II. He enjoyed collecting rocks and minerals and made many pieces of jewelry, buckles and bolos for his family and friends. He was known for his birdhouses and enjoyind gardening and planting trees and flowers around his home. He also enjoyed fishing.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Virginia Moon of Newton and Betty Swafford of Macon, Mo.; two sons, Gene Wingo and John Wingo, both of Newton; 12 grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren. He also was preceded in death by: a daughter, Donna Perez; three sisters, Marguerite Lakey, Cecil News and roberta Still; a bother, Glen Wingo; and a granddaughter, Lisa Swafford.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sinday, with family greeting friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m.,all at Petersen Funeral ... Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Restlawn Gardens of Memory with Pastor Leigh Early of First Christian Church officiating. A military honor guard will be conducted at the graveside service. Burial will be at Restlawn. A memorial has been established with Friendly Acres Retirement Community."
