Barth-Hickey Ancestry" by Dr. David B. Boles, 1993 (addenda 2002). "Barth-Hickey Ancestry" Addenda: "Support (for the probability that Nicholas Brown was the son of Anthony Brown, Sr.) comes from the will of one Christopher Brown, of St Mary's County Co, dated 2 Mar and proved 23 Mar 1759. He named cousins Anthony Brown and Peter Brown, the will was witnessed by Richard Brown, Susanna Brown, and Leond. Brown, and the next of kin were listed as Anthony and Nicholas Brown (New et al, 1996). Of the three cousins (Christopher, Anthony, and Peter), Anthony Brown was referred to as Jr. in 1758 and so was presumably the son of Anthony Brown (Sr.); and Peter Brown was the son of Peter Brown, Sr, who had d. 1758. Christopher was therefore most likely the son of James Brown, the only remaining male Brown of record in 1709-1712.....
"However, it now appears that Brown family connections can be traced to one Richard Brown as early as 1675, making the Anthony-John-William descent unlikely. In that year, Richard Brown purchased land called 'Clark's Rest' from Edward Clark. In 1707, Richard Brown was still in possession of the tract as indicated by rent roll. In 1709/10, it was noted in the margin of the rent roll entry for Clark's Rest that there was a lawsuit of Anthony and Margaret Drew vs. James Brown. Finally, in mid-century Anthony Brown, Sr, appeared in a tax listing for Clark's Rest (1753); Anthony and Peter Brown were listed in a rent roll for Clark's Rest (1754-7); and a 1763 notation on a rent roll for the tract stated, "Peter Brown from James Brown, Sr" (New et al, 1996)."
