I was updating my information on the Shircliffe Family of St Mary's County and found several references to Mary Pawson, the wife or mother of the Shircliffe Immigrant to SMC, being born in Rockbridge, Virginia in 1582. I understand that it says this on her grave in England. Were there any English in Virginia then? This is several years before Jamestown.
Any thoughts?

Jerry,
I have seen the internet posting citing Mary Pawson as John Shirtcliffe's MOTHER, but nothing about any tie to Virginia unless someone got a generation or two mixed up.
See my notes below copied from a site with only citations on John's entry and later.
I suspect that the marriage date was from parish records or Harleian Soc. Publications.
From the website address, it appears that the researcher visited the family holding mentioned and pictured. The early tree has no research citations and the link between the two John's is pure conjecture since no document ties them together.

Thomas Shiercliffe, Gent. son of Robert (7) and Mary Carr,
On 3 Dec 1601 at Ecclesfield he married Mary, d/o Thomas Pawson, aunt and co-heiress of Nicholas Pawson of Windmill Hill. Thomas died 19 Nov 1636 and was buried in South Chancel of Ecclesfield Cathedral, the burial place of the Shiercliffe family. Mary was buried at Ecclesfield 25 Sept 1647. He purchased Whitley Hall from one Parker in 1616; he also held Hole House in Ecclesfield.
Thomas and Mary Pawson were parents of:
(a) Elizabeth bapt. 31 Aug 1602, bur. 1628;
(b) Nicholas bapt. 20 Jan 1603;
(c) William bapt. 21 Aug 1606;
(d) Anne bapt. 6 Aug 1609 mar. Thomas Wright of Unthank;
(e) Margaret bapt. 8 Sept 1614 d. unm;
(f) Mary bapt? m. 13 Oct 1631 Wm Savage;

(h) *John Shiercliffe.
*John Shiercliffe, son of Thomas (8) and Mary Pawson, was born some time after his parent's marriage in 1601.
He is possibly the John Shercliffe who was transported to Maryland c 1638, or the one who immigrated to Md. c1646 (MPL 1:18; 2:418, 425)
On 14 Oct 1651, John Lewger demanded land for transporting various persons including Ann, now wife of Richard Nevill, Deborah Towers, and Ann Goldsborough, now wife of John Shircliffe some 12 years hence ( i.e. earlier) (MPL ABH:150).
