Timothy was among the first to graduate from Kings, now Columbia College, in New York City, in 1758. He studied for Episcopal ministry, but became a lawyer.

Timothy remained loyal to the King, and moved to Nova Scotia in 1783. He later moved to New Brunswick and resided in Saint John.

Timothy married widow Rachel Ogden, and they had no children together. They moved back to New York City in 1800

Rachel returned to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia to live with her children.
