In 1751, Joseph and his son, also named Joseph, moved to Fairfax,Virginia. Joseph Burson did serve in the militia. Apparently the familydid not stay long in Virginia, as the Governor of South Carolina signed aland grant for Joseph Burson in Berkley county in 1768.   Joseph andwife, Mary with their family moved on to Georgia; the 1790 census showshim as a resident, his being the only Burson family in the state.  The1794 tax lists of Warren County show Joseph, Joseph, Jr., Isaac andJonathan as taxpayers in the county.  This tax list is important as thecensus records for Georgia for 1790, 1800 and 1810 are lost; this servesas a substitute.   Apparently while in South Carolina, Joseph wasconverted to the Baptist faith; after moving to Georgia, he pastoredBrier Creek Baptist Church in Wilkes County, with Isaac and Jonathanserving as associate pastors.  Joseph died in 1801, with his will beingprobated in Warren County.  The son shown as legatees are exactly asthose shown on handwritten family records, but additionally daughter andgranddaughters are shown.  Tax records of Burke County show Joseph,Enoch, Isaac and Jonathan as taxpayers in 1790.  Thus the Bursons arrivedin Georgia not many years after its original settlement by Oglethorpe in1732.  By 1790, Georgia had grown to include ten counties, all on theeastern boundary, with the rest of the state being Indian territory.Burke and Warren counties, although not adjacent, were close to eachother.   Burke was created from St. George Parish in 1777, with parts ofBurke County being set off to Jefferson County (1796), Scriven (1798),and Jenkins (1909).  "The Families of Burke County, 1755-1855-- a Census, located in Alabama Archives shows Joseph as having received a grant of400 acres in Burke County.
