Herman Isaacs Op den Graeff
(1644 - 1704)
He had one daughter, may have had more, daughter Margaret competes with the sister Margaret for having married Peter Shoemaker Jr.
Germantown Settler, sailed on the Concord in 1683, one of the original 13. He took part in his family's linen industry and farmed his own land, was agent for the laret land holdings of Jacob Telner and Dirck Slipman. ONe of the 11 men to whom Penn granted the charter of Germantown in 1689, named town president, and also one of the towns' first four burgesses. He removed to Kent Co, now in Delaware state. Went with the Keithians and rverted to being Mennonite. He suffered disfavor by the other colonists like Abraham after siding with the Keithians, who became Mennonite again and then worshipped at the cult of the Woman in the Wilderness or something like that. An odd group. Founded by __ Henry Kosters (seemingly no relative). He could write well, sent letters home from Germantown. He mentioned slavery in Philadelphia in his first letter home in 1684.
"We whose names appear are to these presents subsribed, do hereby certify unto all whom it may concern, that soon after our arrival in this province of Pennsylvania, in October, 1683, to our certain knowledge Herman of de Graff, Dirk op den Graff, and Abraham op den Graff, as well as ourselves, in the care of Francis Daniel Pastorius, at Philadelphia, did cast lots for the respective lots which they and we then begain to settle in Germantown; and the said Graffs (three brothers) have sold their several lots, each by himself, no less than if a division in writing had been made by them. Jacob TELLNER, original purchaser of 5,000 acres of land, by deeds from the property dated 9th & 10th March, 1682, Recorded in Philadelphia Rolls, B.A., Vol. pa. 194; Granted to Herman OPDEGRAEF, Derick OPDEGRAEF and Abraham OPDEGRAEF, 3 brothers, 2,000 acres by Deeds dated 15 and 16, 2mo. '88; recorded Bk C 2d Vol 3d pg 95-6-7 and the same Jacob TELNER, by deed of release dated 4th Apr 1689, recorded folio 124-5 of same book C, 2d, further confirmed the said 2,000 acres and particularly 800 thereof, under bounds in Germantown.
Herman OPDEGRAEF being possessed of his part or portion of the said Land by Deed dated 4, 8ber, 1701, conveyed 390 3/4 acres to Cornelius SIVERTS, of Germantown, Glasier, being then located in TELNER's Township, laid out by warrant from ye Commissioners 6 9mo '85.
1696 _ On 10 September, several Quakers and Mennonites in Germantown werereprimanded by the overseers for neglecting their fences. The officials reported "as insufficient the fences of Herman Op den Graeff, Abraham Op den Graeff, Isaac Jacob and others. But Herman Van Bonn and Johannes Umstat, pretendin(g) they did not know the several fences in their quarter, refused to perform their duty." ("Pennsylvania German Society" Vol. 35, p. 114.)
