Individual Details
Coentgen An Der Stappen
(Abt 1560 - Abt 1609)
The Konishof, or Konis estate, was first mentioned in 1570 in the official documents of Gladbach. It lies in the Damm section of Monchengladbach-Neuwerk, on present-day Neersbricher Street. It is the ancestral home of the KONIS or COENES family and of the American and English branches of the KUNDERS and CUNARD family. Today there are descendants of the German line still living under the name KONIS in Monchengladbach-Neuwerk. The ancestors of our own Thonis KOENDERS lived there until 1643.
The home or estate name took the place of the surname. For example: in 1586, Coentgen an der Stappen married into the estate "toe Coenis". After that time he was called Coentgen Coenis and not Stappen, because he now lived in the Coenis courtyard or estate.
On the 20th of March 1587, Ditgen tho Dam and Merg (his wife), transferred their inherited share of the coenis estate in Damm to Coentgen ther STAPPEN, and Calien, his wife. The estate is located by the Benediction Abbey Neuwerk, between the Quinckelen and Scherhenen estates. The price amounted to 142 Taler.
