William was a carpenter, farmer and a doctor. In his memoirs, William wrote that he was born in Botentout County, Virginia and moved with his family to Vermillion County, Illinois in 1832. In 1834, the family moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky where he grew to manhood and received an education in the local schools. At the age of 19, he left home and engaged in the carpenter's trade for eight years. During this time he studied medicine under Doctor William Hall in Breckinridge. In 1857, he moved to Grayson County, just North of Leitchfield where he purchased land and began farming. In 1870, he began his medical practice. In 1882, he moved to the Sand Springs Precinct and developed a large and lucrative medical practice. He continued farming near Shrewsbury Village and owned the only flouring mill in the district. A copy of William's memoirs was located in the Genealogical Section of the Leitchfield library in 1985. The 1880 census shows him in Leitchfield, married to Mary E. and with nine children in the home. The 1870 census of Grayson County finds William married to Mary Sands and with seven children in the home.
