Evidence for identifying the father of Andrew Goff, b. 1818
In identifying Andrew’s age and place of birth, we find him in four census records:
LaRue County, Kentucky 1850 age 31
LaRue County, Kentucky 1860 age 42
LaRue County, Kentucky 1870 age 52
LaRue County, Kentucky 1880 age 61
I have a transcription of an obituary for Andrew Goff from a Kentucky newspaper. I do not have an image of the actual article, but the transcription reads:
Thursday, March 10, 1887 -
Andrew Goff of near Lincoln Springs, died at his home Saturday, March 5 at the age of 69 years. Was born in Bullitt Co. June 24, 1818. Married in his 22nd year to Zerealda Willian, who survives him with 8 children. One child is Dr. D. J. Goff, who was not present. Burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
These four census records provide agreement with Andrews’ tombstone and obituary, which gives Andrews’ birth date as 23 Jun 1818.
Based on the above information, we know that Andrew was born in Bullitt County in 1818 and moved to LaRue County sometime prior to 1850. We also know that the land that became LaRue County in 1842, was part of Hardin County from 1820 to 1842. Therefore, we can begin looking for Andrew’s father in the census records for Bullitt Co. and Hardin County.
Bullitt County, 1820 census:
Dory Goff, 3 sons 0-10
Edward Goff, 2 sons 0-10
Hardin County, 1820 census:
No Goff families
From the 1820 census, we have two possible fathers, Dory Goff and Edward Goff.
Bullitt County, 1830 census:
Edward Goff, 2 sons 5-10 yrs. Old, 1 son 10-15 yrs old
Joseph Goff, no children
Hardin County, 1830 census:
No Goff families
Now, Edward Goff, seems to be emerging as the likely father of Andrew Goff.
Bullitt County, 1840 census:
Andy Goff, age 20-30, no children
Edward Goff, one son age 15-20
William Goff, age 20-30
Hardin County, 1840 census:
John Goff, age 30-40, no children
We see in 1840 that our Andrew Goff, now 22 has moved out and established his own household in Bullitt County. Edward, who had three sons at home in 1830, now has one son at home. It’s reasonable to conclude that the two sons who moved out are Andrew and William Goff. Additional proof lies in the proximity of the Goff families. Edward and Andrew are enumerated next door to each other, while William is separated from Andrew by only two households.
1850 census for Bullitt Co., Kentucky:
No Goff families
1850 census for Hamiltons, LaRue Co., Kentucky:
Dwelling 50: Andrew Goff, age 31 (living with wife’s parents)
Dwelling 137: Edward Goff, age 57
Dwelling 140: William Goff, age 34
Dwelling 167: E. W. Goff, age 36
Dwelling 448: David Goff, age 28
By 1850, Edward Goff, and his 3 sons, Andrew, William, and David have moved to LaRue County. Edward and William are separated by only two households. E. W. Goff could possibly be a fourth son of Edward, but the earlier censuses do not confirm this.
I believe that the preponderance of the evidence leads to the conclusion that Edward Goff, b. 1793 is the father of Andrew Goff, b. 1818.
