Thomas BATH

(28 Nov 1802 - 18 Apr 1838)

Thomas was christened in the Parish Church at Brinkworth: St Michael and All Saints. The name Brinkworth comes from the Old English 'Bryncaworth' meaning 'Brynca's enclosure'. Brinkworth is about 4 miles south west of Purton in the direction of Bath. This branch of the Bath familiy had been in this Purton Brinkworth region for many generations. Thomas was married at Vernham Dean and buried in Linkenholt. These two small villages are about one mile apart and ar located in farming territory about 30 miles south east of Bath. Linkenholt is where Thomas' wife Jane was from. With Thomas having died young his wife married again to John or Jonathon Alford (noted as Elford in the shipping register) at Linkenholt on 18 October 1838. The children retained the Bath name. Four children of Thomas and Jane came to Australia on 13April 1844 on the ship the Sea Queen accompanied by their mother Jane and their stepfather John Alford. The ship had left England on 11 January 1844. Barque 'Sea Queen' Wooden Barge built 1841 in Calcutta. Made several emigrant trips to Australia in the mid nineteenth century. Also brought gold seekers to Australia. Was reported missing with 11 crew in July 1874. A sample of the newspaper advertisements in January 1852 to attract the attention of gold seekers: Best opportunity for Melbourne. Will positively sail on Tues 6th Jan. The fine first class barque Sea Queen, 450 tons regular, R J Wood commander, has excellent accommodation for cabin, intermediate or steerage passengers, being thoroughly ventilated; and is the only comfortable craft now offering all parties proceeding to the Victorian goldfields. Apply to the Captain on board. They appear to have been accompanied by an older Thomas Bath and William Bath who may have been cousins or uncles. Charles was employed in Melbourne or Moonee Ponds for Mr Brattie for 5 pounds 11 shillings and 11 pence. His sister Ann was sponsored to come to Australia and on arrival Ann worked for a Dr Greaves in Melbourne for one year in 1844 at a wage of 12 pounds 11 shillings and 4 pence. Ann may well have been a nurse because she was earning a significantly larger wage than her brother.

First husband on Jane Sheppard. Had, we think, 5 children between 1827 and 1837 although details of daughter Ann Bath difficult to trace on UK databases. Parish baptism records collection states father's occupation as "labourer". Parish Records Collection 1538-2005burial shows 35 years old when he died in 1838, so birth year approximated as 1803. Married aged approx. 23 years old in 1826 and confirmed on Parish Records Collection 1538-2005marriage database.
