THE LATE MR. S. COOK,
——§——
AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL.
——
The funeral of Mr. Samuel Cook, late general manager of the "Sydney Morning Herald" and the "Sydney Mail," took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended. A number of gentlemen who were more intimately associated with the deceased went out to his late residence, Frankfort, Marrickville. Their names are given below, and they represented not only the literary and other departments of the "Herald" and "Sydney Mail," and other journals, but included many well-known citizens and business men. A large addition was made to the list of those who desired to pay the last mark of respect to the deceased by arrivals from Sydney. The cortege from Frankfort to the Newtown station covered a distance of about half a mile, and many spectators lined the route to the station. The remains were interred in the Congregational section of the Necropolis at Rookwood, and the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. N. J. Cocks, of the Pitt-street Congregational Church, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Roseby, of Marrickville, who offered up appropriate prayers. Before the final and solemn, burial rite was completed the first-named gentleman touched briefly but eloquently upon the virtues of the deceased. He pointed out that in a life which had gone beyond the allotted span their deceased friend had wielded a quiet but never-the less potent influence for good. His strong, sterling character possessed points which he feared were too much a rarity nowadays, and his good work was recognised not only in the profession for which he did so much, but in other walks of life. He was a good citizen in the true sense of the word, and one whose example it would be well for others to follow.
The chief mourners were Messrs. Samuel Edward Cook, Sydney Leicester Cook, Alan Bourne Cook, and Ernest Burton Cook (sons), Dr. H. L. Maitland (son-in-law), Mr. D. H, Chisholm (brother-in-law).

Helen says: "I did know that Samuel Cook was gm of the Sydney Morning Herald. Grannie talked about him often. I used to joke that Chrisso had inherited some of his genes.
Wow talk about patriarchal. All the big nob men get a mention and the woman come in last. In 1954 he already had several great great grandchildren. Grannies sister, Bluebell, was residing in Sydney as were Bluebells children, John and Gerald Hill. Grannie’s brother, Frank, and his sons and daughter were in Bris. Her sister, Georgie, probably deceased by then, had also produced descendants. This is to name but a few. But there is not even a mention of his many descendants."
