Individual Details

John MASSICKE

(Abt 1639 - 27 Aug 1707)

1707, known as John of Force Forge.
John Massicke and Margaret Benson are noted as living at Cunsey Forge in 1668. The family were still there in 1711 when John and Margaret's granddaughter Jane Massix was born. (see photos)
The forge is now a ruin, but is a legally protected site because of its importance to the early history of iron working in Furness. Sadly, no attempt has been made to physically protect what remains, and passers-by can damage it at will. I do not know how old the walls are, or if they are from houses or workshops.
The beck would have been dammed to provide the power for the forge, but is now no more than a pleasant little stream. There are still 'bumps and hollows' in the ground to show the whereabouts of structures that have disappeared.
