Marjorie Victoria MCCULLOCH

(20 Sep 1923 - 8 Jun 1994)

Yasmin says, "I am not sure when Roy and Evelyn separated. I think Mum must have been very young. Say somewhere between 5 and 10. The other main thing that Mum used to tell us is that they were always on the look out in case Evelyn tried to see them at school. They were told by their grandmother to run away if they saw her. I think she also said that Evelyn would come to the house to try and see them, but was not allowed in. Mum was very deeply affected and did know that Evelyn died quite young. She always told us that her mother died of a broken heart. That is one of the reasons she used to argue with Roy a lot. She never forgave him for not allowing her and Thalie to see their mother. I guess Mum did have painting lessons, as she always thought she was quite good. I still have a couple of her paintings."

Katrina says, "Serge & Marjorie mixed in a rather arty, intelligentsia type social environment for years when first married & Damain was very young. Amazing part of Melbourne artistic & cultural fabric/history - eg Noel Counihan, Vic O’Connor, Ailsa O’Connor, medicos etc."

Katrina also said: "Bung Hill was one of mother's sister Marjorie's boyfriends. She had a lot prior to Serge - Solvolu Preradovic. Marjorie was very beautiful, flirty. Marjorie took Bung to meet mother & father at Caulfield home. (Mother told me I did not meet him. Mother said he was quite debonair and a catch!)."

Before meeting Serge, Marjorie went out with Dr A. M. 'Bung' Hill who worked with Hildred Mary Butler (who Anthea worked for in her first job) to established a twenty-four-hour, seven-day-week bacteriology service at the (Royal) Womens Hospital, Melbourne. Their work on post-partum bacterial infection led to dramatically reduced 'childbed fever' (puerperal sepsis).
