Herbert Thomas TOMKINS

(27 Sep 1899 - 1969)

Barry says: I have only a vague recollection of the original homestead at Hinomungie, which was sold with (uncles) Fred and Herb having separate properties nearer Benambra. Fred looked after both during the 2nd war, when Herb was in the army.
Herb later sold out and bought a property, Spring Farm, near Mornington, then sold that and bought Setel Downs, a 70 acre property right on the corner below the tower at Kangaroo Ground.
We used to go there often in the 60’s, (we lived on Lower Heidelberg Road), I shot some rabbits there. Herb’s family was beset by tragedy; his son Doug died of nephritis/bright’s disease in Colac while staying with us while he was under treatment from a Colac doctor who was reckoned to be the best for that disease in Victoria. I was a kid of maybe 12. A daughter, Phyllis, died from a fall from a high rise in Perth, Uncle Herb died at 69 from throat cancer.
The youngest, cousin Nancy, lost her only child Liam to leukaemia at 5; she lives in Hobart and we visited her a few years back, and stay in touch.
