Death
Obituary-- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eva Willett, 81, of rural Brooklyn were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday Jan. 3, 1983 in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home. Mrs. Willett, widow of the late Fred Willett, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1982 in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.Rev. Fred Pierce, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, officiated with Pythian Sisters Memorial Services conducted by Loyalty Temple No. 121. The organist was Mrs. Nina Bartachek. Casket bearers were Kenneth McCulley, James McCulley, Randall McCulley, Andrew McCulley, John McCulley and Timothy McCulley. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established and may be left at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home.
Mary Eva McConnall Willett, daughter of Joseph F. and Mary Edgington McConnell, was born Nov. 15, 1901 in Sheridan Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa. She graduated from the Brooklyn High School and attended Drake University. She taught school for four years in a rural school. She married Cleo Delbert Newton on June 1, 1926 in Brooklyn. Mr. Newton died in 1944.
Mrs. Willett worked for the University of Iowa from 1944 until 1954 and then worked for the Veterans Administration for two years. On April 1, 1956 she married William Fredrick Willett in Iowa City. Since then she has made her home in rural Brooklyn. Mr. Willett died April 21, 1980.
Mrs. Willet was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Pythian Sisters, AARP and CWW Club. Surviving are her son, Albert Newton, Iowa City; two stepsons, Robert and Ralph Willett, both of Brooklyn; her brother Daniel McConnell Sr. of Brooklyn; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Willett was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.
