Individual Details

Edward Agustus MCVEY

(9 Jan 1844 - 30 Nov 1926)

Edward was born in Indiana, came to Iowa in 1853 with his parents. In the winter of 1863, he enlisted in the Civil War from Poweshiek Co.,Ia. as a soldier in the 4th Iowa Cavalry. His cavalry led the advance of Sherman's army from Milligan's Bend, La., to Jackson, Miss, and was the only cavalry regiment with Grant from Grand Gulf to Jackson and Vicksburg.
In the spring of 1871 he came to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in Clay County, l mile south and 3 miles east of Stockham. His wife and two daughters came the following October. They lived on the old homestead until the fall of 1908, when they moved to Stockham.
In the fall of 1892, he was elected state representative from Clay County, where he met William Jennings Bryan, eventually becoming life long friends.
Edward converted in the early days of the war. For many years he was a Methodist. In Stockham where there was no Methodist Church, so he went to the Presbyterian Church.
Told to me by Bonnie Van Campen...My mother remembers Grandmother Margaret having a hard time walking. They evidently were well to do. It was rumored that grandpa Edward had buried his money on the farm since he didn't trust banks. After they both died in Stockham the new owners of the house became "suddenly rich". It was surmised they found Edward's cache.
