Dr. Tilman Bethel
(December 5, 1788 - March 9, 1865)
"Tilman Bethel, born in 1788, was one of Liberty's first doctors and a member of Sink Creek Baptist Church. His recipe book included a cure for cancer as well as a rheumatism ointment which called for toadfrogs and redworms to be boiled together with red pepper. Dr. Bethel apparently treated horses as well as humans as his recipe book also contained a cure for the bots (an ailment affecting a horse's stomach). ("Tennessee County History Series" page 655.)
