"James M. Cantrell enlisted in the Confederate Army, 1st Tennessee Cavalry, under Capt. L. K. Hooper, Wheeler's Division, and served three years. He was taken prisoner at Swan Creek and sent to the Penitentiary at Nashville, where he remained about one month, when he was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio, and held until the surrender. After the war he returned to the old homestead of his father and grandfather (where the latter is buried), and has been engaged there ever since in farming and stock raising."
