Grover Cleveland Greer, Jr was born at Grassy Creek, North Carolina after his parents had returned there for a short period, but was brought up in Harford County, Maryland. He was educated at Mercersburg Academy, Pennsylvania, the Hargrave Military Academy, Virginia and Emory and Henry College, Virginia. He served as a Corporal in Company "D," 115th Infantry, 29th Division, landed in Normandy on "D-Day," was wounded at St. Lo, and again in the Battle of the Bulge, in World War II. He resided at Bel Air, Maryland as late as 1980, where he was the proprietor of Greer's Gulf Station.
