Notes on the killing of Richard Wright
WRIGHT, Richard
Age 65. Shot three times with a revolver & killed by his son-in-law, Doll Judah, on the morning of Sept. 6, 1892 in Salt Creek Twp. Before Doll Judah had gone into Bloomington on the evening of Sept. 5, he had threatened to kill his wife, the dau. of Richard Wright, so she had spent the night at the home of a Lucas family in the Salt Creek neighborhood. Judah returned from Bloomington about one or two o'clock in the morning. He had been drinking and went directly to his father-in-laws house, blaming Wright for the quarrel between he and his wife. Wright shouted to another daughter, Mrs. Era (Eva?) Riddle, age 25, for help after he had been shot the first time. By the time she had come to his aid, two more shots had been fired and Wright was already dead. Judah then pointed the gun at Mrs. Riddle, but she hit him in the face with an ax. He fell to the ground and she hit him several more times.
Mrs Riddle had been separated from her husband for several years, and had a small son who witnessed part of the double killing from the front door of the Wright home. A younger sister of Mrs. Riddle's jumped out a back window of the house and ran for help.
On Wednesday both Wright were buried not far from the spot where the double killing occurred. It will be remembered that a brother of Doll Judah, Dr. Winepark Judah, attempted to kill his wife at Bedford some time ago, then shot himself. Doll Judah had three children. Republican Progress, Wed., Sept. 14, 1892. Newspaper Archives, I. U. Library.
Note: Richard Wright is buried in the new Allen's Creek Cemetery, Polk Twp., Monroe Co., IN. Moved from Hughes Cemetery when Lake Monroe was built. (Researched: dsj) (note from dsj: I believe the remains were moved to Polk Cemetery according to surname list)
