"Prison Guard Indicted In Inmate's Slaying - A Plainview corrections officer for the Wheeler prison unit on East U. S. 70 has been indicted on murder charges in the death of an inmate last month. Jose Rodriguez, 28, no street address available, was indicted by the Hale County grand jury Thursday in the death of 52-year-old Paul Ray Judia, a transfer inmate from Eastland County who was serving a 10-year-sentence for burglary. According to the indictment, Judia died from his head slamming into cell wall, which Warden David Cole said Friday took place during a major use of force after the inmate allegedly kicked Rodriguez. The incident occurred November 12. Judia was initially taken to Covenant Hospital Plainview then transferred to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he died November 15. According to prison system procedures, the body was taken to Fort Worth for autopsy. Cole said because it was a criminal investigation conducted by outside investigators, he didn't have a lot of details on the case, which is filed in 64th State District Judge Rob Kinkaid's court. Rodriguez was hired in March 2005 and is free while awaiting arraignment and the setting of bond." (The Plainview Daily Herald, December 23, 2007, by Richard Orr.)
