Aaron Cantrell

(Abt, 1765 - October, 1834)

"Aaron Cantrell was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina, where he married Betsey Smith. They were living there in 1790, but moved to Tennessee about the time of the settlement of that state. He owned a large plantation in Tennessee and a number of slaves." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, page 30.)

"Aaron Cantrell was born in the northwestern part of Orange County, North Carolina. He married Martha Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith. She was born about 1770 in North Carolina and was a daughter of John and Martha (Potter) Smith. In 1790 they were recorded in Salsbury District of Rockingham County, North Carolina. On 4 November 1792, Aaron bought land on both sides of Wolf Island Creek. John Smith died in the spring of 1798 and Aaron was one of the executors of the hugh estate. In the next thirteen years, there were a number of deeds for land, sold by Aaron as his own property and land of the estate of John Smith. In 1800 Aaron was still recorded in Rockingham county, and seven children were at home. He also owned one slave. In 1810 he was still living in the county and nine children were at home. He also owned 8 slaves. In 1811 he sold 342 acres of land to John Harris and 22 acres to Clement Whittemore and soon thereafter, he moved his family to White County, Tennessee. Here they were recorded in 1820 and six of the children were living at home. In 1830 they were again recorded in White County and three sons were at home, one of whom had married and his wife and small son were living with Aaron. Aaron died in 1834 and Martha was living with son James in DeKalb County in 1840. In 1850 she was recorded in the 7th Civil District in the home of Jane Young of South Carolina."
