"Rowland Cornelius was born ca 1698 in Virginia, died ca 1770 in Amelia County, Virginia. He is shown as a witness, August 8, 1726 in a deed between John Shalton of Spotsylvania County and Augustine Smith, Gent. (Crozier: Va. Co. Records, i, 96.) The will of Rowland Cornelius of Amelia County, Parish of Nottoway, Virginia. (WILL BOOK X, pages 100, 105) names his wife Rebekah and children: Rowland, William, Benjamin, Jesse, Judith Bradley, and Betty Burbridge "if she then be living..." Will dated January 22, 1765. Rebekah died after 1770. A deed dated November 20, 1760 (CULPEPER DEEDS, Book C, page 443) shows that Rowland gave his son Absalom "for love and affection" a negro boy named Gabriel. On the same date he gave his daughter Ann Gaines a negro boy named Charles." ("Cornelius of Virginia and Other Southern States," HISTORIC SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol. ?, pages 46-47.)
