Rowland Cornelius

"The immigrant ancestor of this family came from Holland, Book B, 1726 - 1729, page 222, Northern Neck, Virginia, LAND GRANTS, refers to escheat land of Rowland Cornelius, late of Lancaster County, Virginia who "died seized of about 50 acres in said county ... being an alien at ye time of death ... we also find Rowland Cornelius in his lifetime acknowledged himself to be a Dutchman and therefore an alien and was never naturalized." His son Rowland of King George County made application for this land on December 8, 1727 and the deed was granted on May 10, 1729 by Lord Fairfax.

"Rowland Cornelius the immigrant, born ca 1650 (Land Patent Books of Gloucester County, Virginia) was in America by February 16, 1665/66. He was transported by William Thornton who received 166 acres in Gloucester County on February 16, 1665 for transporting four persons, one of whom was Rowland Cornelius. Rowland was shown as a tithable of St. Mary's, Whitechapel Parish, Lancaster County, in 1716. The inventory of Rowland's estate was signed by his wife Martha, recorded April 12, 1727. Known children were Rowland born ca 1698, and probably William (died 1720) and John (died before March 1739). The will of William Cornelius, dated April 8, 1720, named son Robert, daughters Mary and Martha, and another unnamed child. His wife was not mentioned.
