George Washington Cornelius

(August 10, 1796 - 1847)

"George Cornelius was born August 10, 1796, in Culpeper County, Virginia and died in Pontotoc County in 1847. He was probably buried on the estate of his father and mother. George, being the oldest son of Charles and Elizabeth, had come to Pontotoc County, Mississippi in June and on June 9, 1837 he purchased a large section of land from the New York and Mississippi Land Company. Pontotoc County deed records show that George Cornelius sold land to other members of his family. This land was in the northwest section of Pontotoc County. This is now in Union County, Mississippi, after Union County was formed in 1870. George married Sarah Duval of Culpeper County, Virginia on August 31, 1826 in Goochland County, Virginia. They had seven children, Viz. James, Lucinda, John, Amanda, George, Theodore and Elizabeth. Sarah was born in 1800 in Culpeper County, Virginia."
