"John Hitt was an architect in Logan Hocking, Ohio. He was commissioned Captain of the "Wabashaw City Rifles," a uniformed Company in the 8th Regiment of the State Militia, (Minnesota), 29 January 1863. Before this time he fought in the Mexican War as a Private, Company D., 2nd Regiment Ohio Volunteers. Homer Elliott had the Bible John Hitt carried through the Mexican War, given to him July 9, 1846 by the Young Men's Bible Society of Cincinnati. John served 15 months under General Taylor and took part in the battle of Saltilla." (From an interview by Roy Kemper, with his grandmother, Hope Elliott Kemper, about John Hitt, her grandfather.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Roy Kemper's notes indicate John Hitt was born 30 April 1814 and died 18 January 1865, marrying Margaret Miller 18 December 1846. Other researchers show a birth date of 30 April 1822, died 5 Jan 1864, married 17 December 1847. Census record shows birth of about 1821.)
