1860 Boone County, Missouri census, Rocky Fork Township, taken 16 June 1860, Dwelling/Family #241/236: Octavus KEMPER, 43, male, real estate $1500, personal estate $900, Virginia; Eliza A. KEMPER, 41 (probably should be 31), female, Virginia; Ferdinand COTTLE, 8, male, Virginia; Arthur COTTLE, 7, male, Virginia; Lavada A. COTTLE, 6, female, Virginia; Eldora COTTLE, 5, female. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The Cottle children listed here were the children of Alonzo and Mary Elizabeth (Palmer) Cottle, sister of Eliza Ann Palmer Kemper.)

"According to the (1850) census in his household was Eliza A. Kemper, 20 years old, born in Kentucky, as well as Isabell Newberry? age 13. He was taken prisoner by the federal army and confined on an island on the Mississippi River south of St. Louis. where he contracted smallpox and died. His wife died about the same time." (The Kemper Book, by Clarence Cannon, page 18.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Eliza did not die. She remarried Stephen F. Austin soon after Octavius death.)
