Richard Decatur Greer
(March 18, 1864 - October 14, 1937)
"Richard Decatur Greer was also called "Uncle Dick." He went to school in St. Johns as an adult, along side his son Riley, from grades 5 through 8. As of 1887, he owned and operated the McCormick House hotel in St. Johns. In 1885, he won the catch, throw, saddle and ride a bronco contest in Albuquerque." (William Greer, Illinois, 1995.)
"Richard Decatur Greer died 14 October 1937 in Holbrook, Navajo County, Arizona The source for this is Pauline Greer McCleve (My Grandmother) and Myrna McCleve Birchett, my mother. They also lived in Holbrook. He was a cattle rancher in St. Johns, Arizona and was involved in quite a gun battle in St. Johns several years before my grandmother was born. All of these (birth, marriage and death dates) come from my grandmother, Pauline Greer McCleve's, family records. I hope that you can update your records and that they will be of use to some people. I will try and get the remaining dates of death (other than Riley which we will probably never know, a fascinating story!) and update them for you. By the way, Grandma has been featured in US News and World Report in their centennial issue two years ago. She was also on one of Donohue's last shows which was on centenarians." Greer as 14 October 1937, as is given by Don Birchett. 3 March 1947 in Coalville, Summit County, Utah, is given in Pedigree #1089, World Family Tree, Vol. 2. Birth and death dates for Johanna Christina Kempe are also from this source. Death date of 3 March 1947 and burial place of Richard D. Greer is from William Greer, Illinois. I am not sure which is correct.)
