Mary Jane Browning

(September 27, 1835 - January 30, 1922)

"Mary Jane Browning Fugate was very strict and sweet. Pepa stayed with them when he was 8 (1906). He did the milking. Once the cow put her foot in the milk bucket and Pepa just took the milk into the house like normal. Mary called him in and wanted to know what all the dirt was in her straingin rag and he confessed about the cow. She told him to tell her next time and didn't didn't punish him. He used to go fishing in the creek in the evening. If he stayed out too late, Mary would take the lantern and go look for him and walk with him back to the house. Though he didn't get in trouble for it." (from taped interview with Nathan Ellington Greear, Sr. by Mary South.
