Capt. Abraham Louis DeMoss

Lewis DeMoss was the Sheriff of Davidson County, Tennessee in 1791.

"Just wanted to let you know that the husband of Hannah Greer was Abraham Louis/Lewis DeMoss. I have never seen any information refering to Abraham as "Thomas". The name "DeMoss was Americanized in the first generations from du Mas- of the noble Huegonot family of Montpieler. Abraham Louis/Lewis DeMoss was the older brother of my ancestor, Capt. James DeMoss who married Zana Taylor.

"Abraham Louis DeMoss b. Oct. 1753 VA d. Sept. 26, 1820 Davidson County, Tennessee and is buried in the Thomas DeMoss Cemetery on the banks of Trace Creek, Bellevue, Tennessee married 1775 to Hannah Greer.

"Abraham settled in North Carolina in 1787. He was in North Carolina, Wilkes County, Morgan District int he first census of the U.S. in 1790. Was Captain of Militia of Horse Company in Salisbury District of North Carolina and received a warrant for land which he selected in Wilkes Co, NC, Sold the land in 1803. Moved to Davidson Co., TN about 1800 and bought land on the Big Harpeth River. After his death, his wife, Hannah moved to Saline Co, Missouri and she is buried there. Many of the sons of Abraham and Hannah are also buried in Missouri.

"Abraham, James and their sister Tabitha Chartier settled on the Harpeth River. James on the north of the river, Tabitha 2 miles closer to where Nashville now stands and Abraham on the south side of the river. The son of Abraham Louis DeMoss, Abraham Louis DeMoss, Jr. built a home that overlooked The Harpeth River, Bellevue Plantation, of which the town of Bellevue takes it's name. It was donated to TN in about 1979 and is on the historical register.

"The Direct line of Abraham Louis DeMoss from Count Louis du Mas. (I have extensive info if you would like.): 1. Louis du Mas fled France with his family at the age of 9, in 1683 before the Edict of Nantes, was a refugee staying with the Princes and Princess of Brandenburg, Prussia.; 2. Count Louis du Mas.; 3. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Some researchers have given a marriage date of 11 September 1798 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, as well as the 13 February 1783 marriage date for Lewis DeMoss and Hannah Greer. Both of these marriage dates belong to Lewis' uncle (or brother) Thomas DeMoss, who married Anna (Lowe) Greer, widow of Joseph Greer in 1783 and Nancy (Walker) Greer, widow of John Greer in 1798.)
