"William Henry Gaines enlisted at Chesterfield Court House (Chesterfield Courthouse was the headquarters of General Van Steuben, General George Washington's officer in charge of drilling soldiers in the army), Virginia, on September 1, 1780, giving his age as 19 years, born in Stafford County, Virginia, then residing in Culpeper County, Virginia." "After the Revolutionary War he returned to Culpeper County and appears on this County Tax Books as paying a head tax on himself, one slave named "June" and on two horses in 1782, as will be seen later. He married Jane Pines, daughter of John Pines of Culpeper County, Virginia. (A Lewis Pines of Spotsylvania County mentioned a sister, Jane Gaines, in 1787.)" ("The Gaines Family Tree" typescript.)
