William Greer
(June 30, 1766 - July 19, 1844)
"The family of William Greer moved to Davidson County, Tennessee about 1790. He kept a family Bible. Most of the descendants of the family reside in Tennessee around Pegram, White Bluff and Kingston Springs." (Information of this family from the family Bible, now in posession of John Greer, Kingston Springs, Tennessee (about 1954), as reported in MacGREGOR, MacGHEE, MAGRUDER, GRIERSON, GRIER, GREER --- A HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND MANY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS, compiled by Robert M. "William Greer married Miss Shelton, and settled in Davidson County, Kentucky." (PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1935 by Marshall Wingfield, page 86.) "William Greer married Elizabeth Harkrider, daughter of Conrad Harkrider, May 1, 1791." (OVER THE MOUNTAIN MEN, "Frankin County Marriage Records" by Anne Lowry Worrell, page 11, originally published in 1934.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: "Genealogy of the Greer Family," by Joseph Hampton Greer, about 1914, from which PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Marshall Wingfield, 1935; and "Leaves From the Family Tree," by Penelope Johnson Allen, 1934 or 1936, give "Miss Shelton" as the wife of William Greer. The only marriage record found for William Greer is to Elizabeth Harkrider. Possibly, whoever first gave the Shelton name (probably Joseph Hampton Greer) had this marriage mixed up with William Shelton, who married William Greer's sister, Nellie Greer.)
(Torrance states that William Greer was born in 1776, but Lois Temple gives his birthyear as 1766. Lois has compared the discrepency and believes 1766 is correct. Lois Temple FGS 960.)
(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: In the earlier version of Torrence's work, he lists William Greer as the first child, with no birth date, (as is shown in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1935 by Marshall Wingfield, as was taken from the writings of Joseph Hampton Greer). In the later work, from the Maryland Historical Society, Torrence has moved William down to the sixth child and shows his birth date as June 30, 1776. I think this date may have come from his family Bible, of which I have not seen a copy. As he married in 1791, he would have been only fifteen years old at the time of marriage. This age would have been very young in those days, as few men married before the age of 21. Therefore, I must agree with Lois Temple that the earlier date is most likely correct and I will use it, until other evidence is presented.)
