Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. Easley, South Carolina: Southern Historical Press, 1977, page 178) After the completion of his military service, Maurice received a grant of land in the western section of North Carolina, now a part of the State of Tennessee. Records do not show, but it appears that Maurice was dissatisfied with the land and asked the State of North Carolina for a substitute parcel in Georgia. This was granted, and he and his family settled in Louisville, in Jefferson County, which was the first capital of the State of Georgia (from 1794 until 1807)." (RAIFORD FAMILY by W. R.
